Physiotherapy services at UC Recreation Centre

You First Physio UC Recreation Centre provides physiotherapy and sports rehabilitation services for University of Canterbury students, staff, and the wider Christchurch community. Located inside the UC Recreation Centre at 22 Kirkwood Avenue, our unique advantage is direct access to the Recreation Centre’s gym facilities during your treatment — your physiotherapist can integrate gym-based exercise into your rehabilitation in real-time, in the same building.

Our approach is built on collaboration — we work with you, not on you. Every treatment plan is tailored to your needs, your goals, and your recovery stage. The ability to move seamlessly from hands-on treatment to supervised functional exercise makes this clinic particularly valuable for athletes, active students, and anyone in the later stages of rehabilitation who needs gym-based training as part of their recovery.

UC Recreation Centre is a smaller, specialist clinic staffed by Claire Jones and Paul Leishman — both experienced physiotherapists with strong backgrounds in sports and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Due to our specialist focus and small team, some services available at other You First Physio clinics (such as pelvic health physiotherapy, GLA:D®, and clinical Pilates) are not offered here. For those services, please see our other locations or contact us to discuss options.

Who we help

We treat people at all stages of activity and rehabilitation — with a particular focus on sports injuries, late-stage rehabilitation, and functional training that benefits from gym-based exercise. Our team has expertise in:

  • Sports injury assessment and rehabilitation
  • ACL reconstruction rehabilitation and return-to-sport programmes
  • Post-surgical recovery requiring functional gym-based training
  • Late-stage rehabilitation transitioning back to full activity
  • Running-related injuries and biomechanical issues
  • Concussion and vestibular rehabilitation
  • Complex pain presentations requiring blended physical and cognitive approaches
  • Return-to-work programmes and vocational rehabilitation

Our approach

Your first appointment is 45 minutes. Your physiotherapist will assess your injury, explain what’s happening, and work with you on a treatment plan. You don’t need a referral and you don’t need to have seen a doctor first.

Treatment may include hands-on manual therapy, movement retraining, exercise prescription, taping, and education. What makes the Recreation Centre clinic unique is that when your rehabilitation calls for gym-based exercise, your physiotherapist has direct access to the gym facilities in the same building — meaning we can supervise and coach your exercises in a real gym setting as part of your treatment session.

This seamless transition from clinic-based treatment to functional training is particularly valuable for athletes returning to sport, people recovering from surgery, or anyone whose rehabilitation requires strength training, running mechanics work, or sport-specific movements.

Gym access during treatment

Every UC Recreation Centre physio patient has access to the gym facilities during their appointment, supervised by their physiotherapist. This is included as part of your treatment — there is no extra cost.

Your physiotherapist can work with you in the gym to:

  • Coach correct movement patterns in real-time using gym equipment
  • Progress your rehabilitation exercises in a functional training environment
  • Assess and adjust running mechanics, jumping, or sport-specific movements
  • Build confidence in returning to activity under expert supervision

This makes the Recreation Centre clinic ideal for people in the later stages of rehabilitation who are ready to transition from basic exercises to more demanding functional training.

What our patients say

  • My favourite place in UC.

Everything under one roof. They arrange so many sessions of different activities like yoga, zumba and other fitness activities. They also organise different indoor games and court can be booked online. On other hand, Gym has everything related to heavy weight exercise.

  • Affordable gym option while travelling

For those looking for an affordable gym option while travelling, I'd recommend UC Rec & Sport. Has all the basic equipment needed in the gym plus extra rooms: rock-climbing, boxing/cardio area, women's only section, sauna, groups classes and much more.

  • Glorify Your Mind

This place and all gym's promote wellness. Sorry for the novel. Thank you UC rec centre and staff. I've lost 40kg and have regained years of health. Thank you doesn't seem enough.
